The most up-to-date data from the survey carried out each month by Steam about its users’ hardware and software configurations highlight the continuous growth in the spread of AMD CPUs among video game enthusiasts.
One of the September Steam survey highlights is that AMD Ryzen processors, for the first time, have exceeded 26% usage share on the platform. That corresponds to an increase of 0.85 percent over the previous month. In the survey, Intel remains dominant on the popular gaming platform, with 74% of all CPUs.
These data refer to systems that use Steam on the Windows operating system. Those with Linux OS see AMD processors having garnered an even larger market share, with 33.4% in September 2020.
With the Zen 2 architecture, AMD has offered the most competitive CPUs in recent years and advances to close the IPC gap compared to Intel.
In terms of graphics cards, Nvidia continues to dominate with stable values that have hardly changed in the last few months. The top dog leads with around 74%, far ahead of AMD (16.3%), and Intel (9.7%). It will be interesting to see in the coming months how these quotas may change in light of the debut of the new generation NVIDIA and AMD video cards, as well as the launch of Intel’s first discrete GPU solutions based on Xe Graphics architecture.
Before this, we will see the debut of the AMD Ryzen processors of the 5000 series based on Zen 3 architecture. For these CPUs, AMD provides a direct positioning aimed at gamers. This should presumably generate a further positive impact on the American company’s positioning in the Steam rankings.
