AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT: The New Kings of 1440p Gaming

AMD has officially unveiled its latest graphics cards, the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, aiming to offer a competitive edge for 1440p resolution gaming.

Radeon RX 7800 XT

The Radeon RX 7800 XT is a beast, boasting 16 GB of VRAM, designed to go head-to-head with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4070. With 60 compute units, a clock frequency of 2124 MHz (and a boost up to 2430 MHz), and 3,840 stream processors, this card promises up to 37 TFLOP of graphical performance. Built on a 5nm manufacturing process, it has a slightly higher TDP of 263 W compared to the RTX 4070.

Radeon RX 7700 XT

On the flip side, the Radeon RX 7700 XT is no slouch either. This 12 GB VRAM card is positioned to compete against NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4060 Ti. It features 54 compute units, a clock frequency of 2171 MHz (boosting up to 2544 MHz), and 3,456 stream processors. What’s more, it promises a performance-per-dollar ratio that’s over 20% better than its competitors.

Performance Metrics

According to AMD’s own benchmarks, the Radeon RX 7800 XT can run games at maximum detail at over 60 fps in 1440p resolution. Games like Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Cyberpunk 2077 show a 23% performance increase over the GeForce RTX 4070. However, it’s worth noting that AMD’s cards still lag behind when it comes to ray tracing capabilities, a domain where NVIDIA continues to excel. The Radeon RX 7700 XT also shows significant gains, outperforming the GeForce RTX 4060 Ti by up to 31% in some games.

FidelityFX Super Resolution

AMD is also launching its next generation of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR), dubbed AMD FSR 3. This comes with Fluid Motion Frames 9, essentially AMD’s answer to NVIDIA’s Frame Generation in DLSS3. Coupled with Anti Lag+, this feature minimizes latency in competitive gaming, positioning AMD as a formidable opponent to NVIDIA Reflex.

Price and Availability

Both GPUs will be available starting September 6, with the Radeon RX 7800 XT priced at $499 and the Radeon RX 7700 XT at $449. While AMD isn’t exactly undercutting NVIDIA here, the company might adjust these prices to make the cards more appealing to consumers.
