Facebook Inc. has filed a lawsuit against a Mumbai-based company for fraud relating to 12 domain names registered to impersonate Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp sites.
In order to prevent fraud and stop the malicious use of the company and product names, the lawsuit has filed on Monday in a Virginia court against 12 domain names registered by India-based proxy service Compsys Domain Solutions Private Ltd.
The social networking giant filed suit after reaching out to Compsys about these domain names and did not receive any response.
According to Facebook, the 12 registered domains “were designed to deceive people by impersonating our family of apps.” Some of the domain names in the lawsuit includes: facebook-verify-inc.com, instagramhjack.com, and videocall-whatsapp.com.
Facebook’s ongoing effort to protect people from phishing, credential theft, and other methods of online fraud, the company has been regularly scanning the internet for domain names and apps that infringe on the company’s trademarks.
This past March, Facebook has filed a similar lawsuit against popular domain registrar Namecheap and its proxy service.
