Goodbye Nintendo 3DS: The portable console is discontinued after 10 years

The Nintendo 3DS handheld console presented in 2010 and launched a year later is finally history.

Nintendo has confirmed that the 3DS family portable consoles have been discontinued and will no longer be manufactured — this includes models New 3DS XL, New 2DS XL, and 2DS.

Nintendo has had few stumbles in the portable console industry, and the 3DS wasn’t one of them. Born as the successor to the immensely popular Nintendo DS, 3DS continued the same concept of the dual screens but adding power and interesting technology.

Indeed, what really made the Nintendo 3DS stand out was the “3D” in the name. This was a console that allowed us to enjoy three-dimensional graphics without the need for special glasses.

After the Wii U, which was discontinued in 2017 and the now announced the end of the 3DS, Nintendo is apparently fully relying on its Switch console.

A successor to the 3DS has not yet been named. The hybrid console Switch — which appeared in 2017, has so far sold over 61 million times, is rumored to be launched in a new version in 2021. The upcoming Switch can both be connected to the television and used on the go and offer a higher resolution than the current model.

With this, Nintendo wants to keep up with the competition from Sony and Microsoft, who recently announced new Playstation and Xbox models.
