As we all know Intel’s Optane Technology helps in accelerating systems for workloads demanding large capacity and fast storage. And with this technology, Intel developed a series — Optane SSD — that can supersede any traditional NAND SSD by its speed and performance. But until now, Optane SSDs are only available for server and enterprise use.
And now Intel made Optane Technology available for consumers aimed at high-end laptops, such as gaming machines and workstations.
The new Optane SSD 900P series of drives are designed specifically for gamers and with Optane Technology it can even able to be used in a memory pool along with DRAM — means an additional RAM in your system — without needing to adjust the OS or any applications.
With Optane SSD 900P, Intel claims sequential read speeds up to 2,500 MB/s and sequential write speeds at up to 2,000 MB/s and it can outperform any rivals. — via ZDNet.
Since the drives are especially for gamers, Intel is offering the new drives with an exclusive ship for the game Star Citizen, whose CitizenCon event was the launch site for the Optane SSD 900P.
Optane SSD 900P will be available in two storage capacities — one with 280 GB and other with 480 GB capacity. The new SSDs will come in U.2 or HHHL (half-height half-length) expansion card form factors, though the U.2 drive apparently only ships at 280GB capacity.
According to Intel, Optane SSD 900P was available starting October 27 and the good news is that these babies aren’t too expensive — cost around $389 for the 280GB drives and $599 for the 480GB version.
