Begins The Path To The Metaverse: Meta Launches 3D Avatars For Facebook, Messenger And Instagram

Meta remains focused on its mission to bring to life the metaverse. To advance this plan, the company has presented its new 3D avatars.

Although avatars are not something completely new in the Meta ecosystem. They have long been usable on Facebook, Messenger, and Oculus Quest. However, now the company is bringing them to Instagram for the first time.

At the moment, they have only been officially launched for users in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where users can use their 3D avatars either as a profile picture or to share them via direct message or even in the app’s stories.

The company has also added different skin tones, shapes and other elements such as wheelchairs so that anyone who wants to create their own avatar can see themselves represented in it, which in the end is what the metaverse is about. Users will also have the ability to customize their avatars with new virtual clothing, including NFL jerseys.

In this first step towards its vision of the metaverse, Meta is committed to a unified experience in which avatars — currently only one per account is allowed — can “digitally represent the user” on all of the company’s social platforms.
