Purism — hardware and software maker who focuses on software freedom, computer security, and Internet privacy has recently launched its next generation of Linux powered Librem 14 laptops.
The new Librem 14 laptop is the successor to the company’s popular Librem 13 laptop line that launched more than four years ago.
Now after four generations, with significant hardware upgrades, the manufacturer has given a major overhaul to the laptop series.The most notable feature of the Librem 14 is the new 14″ 1080p IPS matte display, which, due to the smaller bezel, fits within the same footprint as the Librem 13.
Without compromising user’s security and privacy, Librem 14 comes with the same popular security features such as hardware kill switches to disable the webcam/microphone and WiFi and support to PureBoot — Purism’s high-security boot firmware. Like always, the laptop comes preloaded with PureOS — Purism’s operating system endorsed by the Free Software Foundation.

The Librem 14 is powered with Intel’s Core i7-10710U CPU from the Comet Lake generation with 6 cores and 12 threads, and the processor is supported by up to 32 GB RAM, so the laptop should also be suitable for computing-intensive work. Also, Two M.2 slots for SATA or NVMe SSDs are available for permanent storage.
Because of many requests, the Gigabit ethernet card with built-in RJ45 connector is back. Support for two external monitors via HDMI and USB-C. So a display output for 4K at 60 Hz is possible via USB-C, as well as via the existing HDMI connection. And also, the device can be charged in addition to the barrel connector via USB-C Power Delivery.
The Librem 14 is available for pre-order now with an “early bird” base price of $1199 and will ship in early Q4 2020. Last year, Purism started shipping Librem 5 smartphones — the phone that focuses on security by design and privacy protection — to early backers of the crowdsourced, $699 smartphone project.
