Snapdragon 870: Qualcomm Bringing The Maximum Operating Frequency Of The Prime Core To 3.2 GHz

Qualcomm has presented the Snapdragon 870 5G Mobile Platform, a high-end SoC for smartphones. Qualcomm defines it as the direct evolution of Snapdragon 865 Plus, resuming its configuration and bringing the maximum operating frequency of the prime core to 3.2 GHz.

Basically, the Snapdragon 870 is still a Snapdragon 865, but with a higher maximum clock for the Cortex-A77, which has been chosen as the prime core.

Built on the success of the Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus, the new Snapdragon 870 was developed in response to the needs of manufacturers and the mobile industry,” said Qualcomm’s Kedar Kondap. “The new processor will power a selection of flagship devices from manufacturers such as Motorola, iQOO, OnePlus, Oppo, and Xiaomi. “

Qualcomm keeps the Kryo-585 configuration as 1 + 3 + 8, but adjusts the clock slightly. The economical four Cortex-A55 continue to run at 1.8 GHz and three Cortex-A77 at 2.42 GHz. The fourth, the Prime Core, on the other hand, was accelerated by 100 MHz from 3.1 to 3.2 GHz.

For the Adreno 650 graphics unit in the Snapdragon 870, Qualcomm states a performance increase of ten percent, which means that the iGPU performance should correspond to that of the Snapdragon 865 Plus.

All other key technical data of the Snapdragon 870 correspond to the Snapdragon 865 Plus. With this, compatibility with the FastConnect 6900 platform for Wi-Fi 6E was added in July 2020.

Qualcomm expects devices with the Snapdragon 870 in the course of the first quarter of 2021, primarily from Asian partners.
