Qualcomm introduces Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G — a new CPU that, in addition to bringing 5G connectivity to laptops, boasts efficiency.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G succeeds the 8cx arrives without too many changes, but it is based on the same architecture that has characterized the latest SoCs released for smartphones, such as the Snapdragon 865 Plus.
Like Snapdragon 865 Plus, the idea is to bring 5G connectivity to laptops thanks to the Snapdragon X55 modem, compatible with the band below 6 GHz.
This 8-core processor has as its main point of interest its energy efficiency — it promises an autonomy of up to 25 hours, thanks to its ARM architecture. The rest of the essential connectivity, such as 4G LTE or WiFi 6, is not left behind.
Like the first generation, this Snapdragon 8cx Gen 2 5G is manufactured at 7 nanometers with the TMSC manufacturing process. It has 8 Kryo 495 cores, and supports compatibility with LPDDR4x RAM capable of working at 2,133 MHz in 8 channels. Also, it supports NVMe SSDs with UFS 3.0 systems at most. Qualcomm claims that the 8cx Gen 2 is 18% more powerful than a 10th Gen Intel Core i5.
Qualcomm’s new SoC will hit the market when Intel is promoting 5G laptops with the new Tiger Lake processors like the Galaxy Book Flex 5G presented by Samsung at IFA. And Apple is developing equipment with new chips under the Silicon platform that will surely support the new networks.
