AMD to Invest $400 Million in India To Expand Its R&D and Engineering Capabilities

AMD has announced a whopping $400 million investment in India over the next five years. The company is set to build its largest design center in Bengaluru, India.

This new AMD campus, sprawling over 500,000 square feet, will serve as a hub of innovation and technological advancement. The campus is expected to open its doors by the end of 2023, adding approximately 3,000 new engineering roles by 2028.

The company’s journey in India started in 2001 with a modest site in New Delhi. Today, AMD boasts more than 6,500 employees across the country. With the addition of the new Bengaluru campus, AMD’s footprint in India will extend to 10 locations, including Bangalore, Delhi, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, and Mumbai.

Equipped with state-of-the-art collaboration tools and seating configurations designed to encourage teamwork, the campus will be a hotbed for cutting-edge ideas and solutions.

The investment is a vote of confidence in India’s semiconductor industry, backed by the Indian government’s policy initiatives. As the demand for semiconductors continues to surge globally, India’s chip market is projected to triple by 2026, reaching about $64 billion.

AMD’s decision to invest in India has been welcomed by the Ministry of Electronics & IT. The new center will provide tremendous opportunities for India’s vast pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers. The move is also a significant step towards reducing reliance on expensive imports and dependence on Taiwan and China for semiconductors.

The future of AMD in India looks promising. The company’s broad product portfolio, fueled by growth in artificial intelligence, networking, and 6G communications, will continue to play a pivotal role in delivering high-performance and adaptive solutions to support AMD customers worldwide.

As AMD’s Chief Technology Officer, Mark Papermaster, puts it, “By further investing and expanding our presence in Bangalore, we are committed to driving innovation in India.”
