Hackers Running An Auction: Cyberpunk 2077 Source Code Costs $7 Million

It looks like hackers aren’t bluffing. After the cyberattack on CD Projekt, hackers have put on an auction for stolen source code of games developed by the Polish studio.

In the auction, the starting bid for the source code of Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3, and the role-playing game Thronebreaker, also from CD Projekt, is $1 million, with higher bids in increments of $500,000. Alternatively, a buy-it-now price for the code for all three games costs $7 million.

The offer on a forum for hackers was first noticed by a site called Cybernews. Excerpts from file folders serve as evidence that the whole thing is not fake.

The source code of the ‘Gwent’ card game has already appeared on the net. Although it was quickly deleted from many download servers there, it should still be available on relevant platforms.

Moscow is named as the reference point for the time, which points to blackmailers from Eastern Europe or Russia – but could also be the wrong track. CD Projekt is based in Poland.

CD Projekt itself reported the incident of the cyberattack on February 9, 2021. In addition to the source codes, company documents have been copied. According to the CD Projekt, there is no evidence that personal data has been tapped from players or users of the company’s own services.

Update: February 12, 2021

The auction of the data copied from CD Projekt was apparently ended prematurely. Reason: An unknown bidder has bought all the data, as The Verge writes, among others. Further information, such as the price, is not available.
