Samsung Announces World’s First CXL 2.0 DRAM for High-Performance Computing Devices and Servers

Samsung has announced the world’s first DRAM product based on the new standard CXL 2.0. This new DRAM is intended for high-performance computing devices and servers and offers a capacity of 128GB. The company has developed this product in collaboration with Intel and runs on the Intel Xeon platform.

The new CXL 2.0 DRAM product is an improvement over the CXL 1.1 DRAM product announced in mid-2022. It supports the PCIe 5.0 standard using x8 lanes and can offer data transfer bandwidth of up to 35Gbps. This enables hosts to dynamically allocate memory pools according to their needs and requirements, thus enhancing efficiency and reducing operating costs.

Samsung is set to begin mass production of the CXL 2.0 DRAM later this year and will offer them in various sizes for high-performance computing and server customers. They will provide more bandwidth and capacity to the server’s main DRAM, thus delivering faster AI and ML performance.

CXL is a next-generation interface that streamlines the accelerators, DRAM, and storage devices installed in the CPUs of high-performance server systems. By using it in combination with the main DRAM, bandwidth and capacity can be expanded, leading to a ripple effect on the next-generation computing market. This is particularly important in the face of increasing demand for high-speed data processing technologies such as AI and ML.

CXL 2.0 DRAM will deliver more bandwidth and capacity to the server’s main DRAM, thus improving overall efficiency and reducing operating costs. Samsung’s commitment to expanding the CXL ecosystem through partnerships with data centres, servers, and chipset companies is likely to lead to further advancements in the field of high-speed data processing, benefiting a wide range of industries.
