Steam Data Shows PC Gamers Are Abandoning Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077 is still a headache for CD Projekt RED. The title, which arrived on consoles and computers on December 10, 2020, suffers the consequences of its unfinished development. Disappointment from PS4 and Xbox One users, anger from investors, and criticism from experts seem not to be the only thing. Now, PC gamers are abandoning it too.

According to a report from Githyp, the title has lost 79% of players since its premiere. At the time of its launch, the futuristic game had one million simultaneous players; it currently has only 225,000.

Cyberpunk 2077’s crash on Steam has been three times faster than that of The Witcher 3. This other title, also developed by CD Projekt, took three months to reach similar figures.

According to Githyp, this type of drop is normal in single-player games with a linear plot, where players exhaust the possibilities, but not in those with an open world.

Despite its big problems, Cyberpunk 2077’s sales balance isn’t all bad. The CD Projekt RED title has been crowned Steam’s top-grossing for six weeks in a row. In addition, since its launch and until December 20, 13 million copies were sold, both physical and digital. This data is particularly striking as refunds have been subtracted.
