Polish development studio CD Projekt Red has announced that it has suffered a cyberattack that has resulted in large data theft.
The hackers have succeeded in compromising the company’s servers and accessing data from Cyberpunk 2077, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and an unpublished version of the game, expected to be the next-gen version of The Witcher 3, as well as the Witcher card game Gwent.
The attack has also resulted in access to the company’s financial, human resources, legal, and investor relations information.
The hackers also left a blackmail letter, the hacker or hackers demand to be contacted within 48 hours, otherwise, all documents and codes should be published or journalists made available, which should bring the share price of CD Projekt Red to collapse.
After the debacle of the launch of Cyberpunk 2077, the image of CD Projekt Red is severely damaged. If information is leaked in compliance with the threats of the attack, it can create an irreparable hole in the company itself.
According to the message left behind, the perpetrators also encrypted the compromised servers but are well aware that CD Projekt Red can restore them from backups.
The developer has put the case in the hands of the authorities and forensic experts who analyze the impact of the attack, the level of penetration, and the stolen data. The cyberattack has also encrypted several of the company’s computers and servers.
CD Projekt Red does not want to respond to the demands of the hackers; negotiations with them are also excluded. Personal data of customers and players are obviously not affected, the developer assured.
