As part of the business figures for the last quarter, Sony also announced official sales figures for the PlayStation 5. Accordingly, since the game console was released on November 13 and 19, 2020, until the end of the year, 4.5 million units were sold worldwide despite severe delivery problems.
In the same period, around 1.4 million Playstation 4 were also sold in the past quarter.
However, the demand was so great that the Playstation 5 was hardly available. According to the report, Sony wanted to increase the production volume together with its partners AMD and TMSC.
Nevertheless, Sony is still getting through the corona pandemic well, thanks mainly to the business with its Playstation game console. In the Christmas quarter, sales rose by nine percent to just under 2.7 trillion yen ($25.7 billion), as the electronics group announced. In terms of profit, there was a big jump of 62 percent to around 372 billion yen (almost $3 billion).
After the strong performance, Sony raised its forecasts for the fiscal year that will run until the end of March accordingly. Sony hopes to be able to sell another three million PlayStation 5 by the end of March this year, which would bring it to 7.6 million units, slightly above the sales of the PlayStation 4 in the first two sales quarters in 2013 and 2014.
