Qualcomm has announced that the Snapdragon mobile processors will have new names in the future. Qualcomm decided to no longer designate the chips with three-digit numbers as before but will sort them according to series and generations.
The first processor with the new naming scheme could be presented at the upcoming Snapdragon Tech Summit. Which would now arrive under the name Snapdragon 8 — could be the successor to the Snapdragon 888, but Qualcomm has not yet announced further details.
The new scheme is based on the numbers of the previous classifications — chips of the 8-series represent the premium class, the 7-series is the upper class. Chips marked with a 6 are the middle class, while the 4-series represents the entry-level class.
For example, a second-generation 6-series processor would then be called the Snapdragon 6 Series Gen 2. It is currently unclear whether Qualcomm will also apply the new naming scheme to older models or whether they want to restart with the coming models.
On the other hand, it seems that Qualcomm and Snapdragon are separating. Or at least in terms of its branding strategy — ” Snapdragon will be a separate product brand with specific ties to the Qualcomm brand where appropriate,” explains Qualcomm.
This is something that has already begun to be seen in some of the company’s products, such as the latest processor, the Snapdragon 888 Plus that does not have the ‘Qualcomm’ in its promotional images.
In fact, in order to make it easier to differentiate between the different ranges of its new family, it will opt for the use of different colors, for example, the use of gold tones for its premium level chips; while other nomenclatures such as 5G will disappear completely, ensuring that it will be a common feature in all devices of this new stage.
