Canonical Launches Ubuntu Pro: A Subscription Service for Enhanced Security and Long-term Support

Canonical, the company behind the popular open-source operating system Ubuntu, has announced the general availability of Ubuntu Pro, a subscription service designed to improve the security of Ubuntu installations. Ubuntu Pro provides various features and benefits to users, including longer support for Ubuntu long-term support (LTS) versions.

One of the primary advantages of Ubuntu Pro is that it extends LTS Ubuntu release support from 5 to 10 years. This is particularly useful for users who rely on older applications that may not be accessible in newer Ubuntu versions. For example, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be phased out in a few months, but with Ubuntu Pro, you may extend the life of this Ubuntu version until 2028.

Another advantage of Ubuntu Pro is that it provides crucial updates to 23,000 additional packages in addition to the main OS. This includes critical, high, and specific moderate CVEs (Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures) for “thousands of applications and toolchains,” as well as compliance with FedRAMP, HIPAA, and PCI-DSS. Users may be certain that their Ubuntu installations are as safe as possible since they will receive updates for a wide range of software and tools commonly used in enterprise environments.

Ubuntu Pro has been offered for all Ubuntu LTS releases from 16.04 LTS and is available in several layers. There is even a free version for personal use. The regular Ubuntu Pro membership costs $25 per year for workstations and $500 per year for servers, is available through Canonical, and includes a 30-day free trial. This makes it accessible to many users, from individuals to small businesses and larger enterprises.

You may use Ubuntu Pro on up to 5 machines for personal or small commercial usage, or 50 if you are an official member of the Ubuntu community. Simply log in to your Ubuntu One account or create a free account to get a token for linking your machine. This makes it simple for anybody to use Ubuntu Pro and benefit from its security and support features.

With longer support for LTS versions, necessary updates to a wide range of software and tools, and many subscription levels available, Ubuntu Pro is an excellent choice for anybody wishing to use Ubuntu in an enterprise environment.
