During the world’s largest mobile phone-related exhibition Mobile World Congress (MWC 2023), Google announced the latest additions to the upcoming Android updates and Wear OS. 

About half of the announced features have already been rolled out.

Page Zoom in Chrome for Android: Previously, pinch-to-zoom in Chrome for Android zoomed the entire page like zooming a static image. From today on Chrome Beta, you can zoom in by pinching while only expanding the size of text, images, videos, and controls while maintaining the page layout. (Will roll out to stable channel soon). This zoom is available up to 300%. Chrome for Android will also let you set a default zoom level, so you don’t have to pinch every time.

Google Meet Noise Cancellation: This Feature is technically already available on some phones and tablets but is now available on more phones.

Freehand PDF Annotation Now Available in Google Drive: You can scribble notes on PDFs using your finger or stylus within the Google Drive application. You can also highlight text to make it stand out when you or your colleagues read it.

New Emoji Kitchen Combos: Combining two different emojis is already possible with Emoji Kitchen for Gboard, but now you can create even wilder combos.

Features available at a later date

Google hasn’t said exactly when the rest of the new Android features would be coming, but they’re coming soon.

Fast pairing with Chromebook: If you have earbuds, you can soon connect them to your Chromebook with just one tap. What’s more, if the earbuds are already connected to your Android phone, they will automatically be available on your Chromebook without even needing to be set up.

Google Keep Single Note Widget: This new widget lets you manage your notes and check off your to-do list from your home screen.

Tap-to-pay animation in Wallet: As soon as you successfully tap-to-pay on your Android device with Google Wallet, you’ll see a new animation confirming the transaction.

Google Keep on Wear OS: Get quick access to Keep notes and other features from the main watch face on Wear OS 3+ smartwatches. Create notes with new shortcuts and keep them on your watch face.

New Wear OS Sound and Display Modes: These new Wear OS 3+ features improve accessibility on your watch. You’ll be able to have mono audio instead of stereo and use colour correction and grayscale display modes.

Qualcomm, the chipmaker, has announced a collaboration with smartphone manufacturers to bring its Snapdragon Satellite communication system to smartphones at the MWC 2023 mobile fair.

Snapdragon Satellite is a satellite-based communication system allowing two-way communication for users. At MWC, the company named the smartphone manufacturers Honor, Motorola, Nothing, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi partners.

Qualcomm stated that Snapdragon Satellite would be available for all Snapdragon 4 to 8 series 5G modem RF systems and SoCs. Satellite communication can be used for emergency calls, SMS, and other text messages. The Snapdragon Satellite uses the Iridium system that has long been used for special satellite phones and accesses low-station satellites.

It is not yet known when the first devices with satellite communication will appear. Xiaomi’s latest high-end smartphone, the Xiaomi 13, does not yet support satellite communication.

Qualcomm has plans to expand the system to other device categories in the future, including the automotive and IoT sectors. In addition, Snapdragon Satellite will also support 5G NTN (Non-terrestrial Networks) in the future.

Snapdragon Satellite needs an X70 5G modem and a Qualcomm SoC to work. But existing phones with an X70 modem won’t get this feature because they don’t have the right technology.

The Snapdragon Satellite also needs a clear sky view to talk to the satellites. Qualcomm and Garmin collaborate on sending emergency messages via satellite, as Garmin already has an emergency call service called Garmin Response.

With Snapdragon Satellite, Qualcomm aims to connect remote areas and provide a reliable communication system during emergencies where traditional communication infrastructure is unavailable — similar to the feature introduced by Apple in the iPhone 14. Xiaomi unveiled its latest flagships at MWC 2023, including Xiaomi 13, 13 Pro, and 13 Lite. 

The new design includes a squared module for the camera, featuring a triptych of sensors and the Leica logo. The standard model has a 6.36″ flat FHD+ 120Hz AMOLED E6 display, while the Pro model features a larger 6.73″ curved WQHD+ 120Hz AMOLED E6 display. Both models have a 32 MP front camera, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset, and LPDDR5DX type RAM. Xiaomi 13 Pro has a 120W super-charging feature for its 4,820mAh battery, while Xiaomi 13 has a 67W fast-charging feature for its 4,500mAh battery.

Xiaomi 13 has a triple rear camera, which includes a 50 MP IMX 800 main module with Hyper OIS optical stabilization function, a 10 MP wide-angle lens with a viewing angle of 120 degrees and a 10 MP telephoto module.

Xiaomi 13 Pro

The star is the Xiaomi 13 Pro with the best cameras. The primary sensor in this camera is a 1-inch IMX989 sensor with an f/1.9 aperture. It is built using Leica VARIA-SUMMICRON technology. For improved photos, the sensor also supports Xiaomi’s pro-focus.

Lastly, there is a 14mm Leica 50MP sensor with an aperture of f/2.2 and a field of view of 115.

Xiaomi 13 Lite, on the other hand, is compact and lightweight with a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset, a 6.55″ Full HD+ 120Hz AMOLED display, and a 4,500mAh battery with 67W fast charging.

All the models run on MIUI 14 based on Android 13. The latest Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 mid-range chip has four Cortex-A710 cores up to 2.4GHz and four Cortex-A510 cores up to 1.8GHz. According to the manufacturer, this chip outperforms the Snapdragon 778G by 20% in terms of GPU performance and is 30% faster in AI tasks. 

An important feature of the Xiaomi 13 Lite is its cameras. Unlike older models with single front cameras, there is a dual selfie camera with a 32-megapixel main sensor and an 8-megapixel depth sensor. The latter provides a better background blur effect. There are three modules on the back of the smartphone. The main one is a 50-megapixel Sony IMX766 image sensor with a size of 1/1.56 “and with pixels 1 micron in size. The camera received optics with an aperture of f / 1.8. An 8-megapixel IMX355 sensor complements it with wide-angle optics and a 2-megapixel camera with a macro lens.

The contribution of Leica is evident in the improved camera features of the flagships, which include the use of lenses and software optimizations. The camera features of the flagships have also improved, together with the proprietary Surge C2 chip exclusively dedicated to camera management.

YouTube Now Allows Creators To Add Multilingual Voice Tracks To Their Videos
