If it detects an accident, the gadget starts a countdown and sounds a warning siren before making an automated emergency call. The user can cancel the call manually, although doing so in a loud setting is not always easy.

Apple is collaborating with local emergency services to fix the false positive issue. The release of iOS 16.1.2 in December 2022 improved crash detection on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro devices.

Although there have been allegations of false positives, there have also been reports of the crash detection system operating properly and saving lives. For example, in Australia, an iPhone successfully alerted emergency services to a car accident, allowing police to get on the scene in just eight minutes.

However, the former Facebook employee claims that the battery drain is caused by factors other than the app’s resource use. This practice is also claimed to be carried out by the team led by Mark Zuckerberg. George was dismissed from Facebook for opposing negative testing, a process in which technology companies intentionally drain a user’s smartphone battery to test a new feature. These tests are often performed on a random sample of Facebook users, and not all users are affected.

George said in his lawsuit against Facebook that intentionally discharging a smartphone’s battery puts users at risk, especially in emergencies where they need to communicate with others. The lawsuit was later dropped in a federal court in Manhattan, but George believes that Facebook’s approach is illegal and allows anyone to manipulate a smartphone’s battery.

This claim raises major concerns regarding user privacy and safety and needs additional investigation.

According to the lawsuit, Apple collects and stores personal information and activity from users on its consumer mobile devices and applications, even if consumers indicate in their Apple mobile device settings that their data and information should not be shared. Still, Apple collects and uses vast amounts of data for financial advantage.

The lawsuit cites a report published last November by the Mysk development team, which claims that Apple gathers analytics data despite customers limiting this option in iPhone settings. This study appears to have motivated the filing of the case.

The company has yet to respond to the case. It can, however, claim that it does not breach the privacy policy because receiving customer data does not constitute transferring information to a third party. Regardless, it is apparent that the corporation is responsible for protecting user data and being transparent about its collection methods.

Discord Introduces AV1 Streaming Capabilities with NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4000 Series GPUs

Thanks to NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 4000 series GPUs, the online chat platform Discord has just announced support for AV1 broadcasting capabilities. Gerard Delgado, NVIDIA’s product line manager for content creators, announced the news on Twitter.

Discord has released an AV1 codec streaming compatibility update on NVIDIA’s GeForce RTX 40 series graphics cards, such as the RTX 4090. This allows users to purchase Discord’s Nitro subscription (sold separately) and stream at 8Mbps at a maximum of 4K 60fps.

Before this update, users on compatible systems could only utilise the OpenH264 video codec (provided by Cisco Systems, Inc.) or H.264 hardware acceleration with GPU boosting for improved video encoding and decoding. AV1 is considered the next-generation codec, and it is expected to gain popularity in the future since it can reproduce the same resolution and frame rate as H.264 while using half the capacity, and it is open and royalty-free.

Discord provides its customers with two membership options: “Nitro Basic” for $2.99/month and “Nitro” for $9.99/month. Users may get 4K 60fps AV1 streaming with the “Nitro” subscription. However, even free users have access to AV1-compatible content.

This is a significant development for Discord since it allows users to enjoy high-quality streaming for a fraction of the cost and bandwidth. Since AV1 is open and royalty-free, it is more accessible to a larger audience, making it an excellent alternative to proprietary codecs.
