Goodbye, Miners: Ethereum Blockchain Announced The Transition To The Proof of Stake System

Ethereum blockchain PoS

Ethereum, the second largest cryptocurrency, has moved from Proof of Work (PoW) to the Proof of Stake (PoS) model — the so-called major upgrade “Merge” was completed on the morning of September 15, 2022 in the Ethereum blockchain. This was confirmed by the creator Vitalik Buterin.

The motive for this blockchain reform was a concern for the planet and the need to reduce the carbon footprint of the company — the new algorithm of work will allow the second largest cryptocurrency to significantly reduce energy consumption by an estimated 99.95 percent.

So what exactly has changed?

The Ethereum PoW system worked by having crypto miners compete to record transactions on their ledger by solving cryptographic puzzles — earning Ether in exchange. The process was extremely energy intensive, requiring 200 kWh per Ethereum transaction, which is comparable to what a family uses in a week. In fact, the entire network consumes about 78 TWh per year, about the same as a country like Chile.

On the other hand, the new PoS algorithm requires validators to hold and stake tokens — in this case, at least 32 ETH. This works similarly to lottery tickets. The more ETH you stake, the more likely you are to be selected to record a block of transactions on the Ethereum digital ledger, earning you a reward. This system is significantly more efficient — as we already told, the Ethereum network is expected to consume 99.95 percent less energy. In turn, this will reduce global electricity consumption by 0.2 pecent.

Also, Ethereum’s transition to PoS does not involve the use of GPUs for mining, which should lead to further price reductions for GPUs.

Ethereum’s transition to the PoS model has been under development since 2016. The switchover began on September 6, when the Bellatrix update was activated.

Will an Asteroid Hit Earth? Is It Possible to Prevent the Calamity?

Will an asteroid hit Earth

We are lucky enough to be living the most tranquil era in the history of our solar system. It is difficult to conceptualize a period approximately 4 billion years back when Earth was regularly hit by enormous comets and asteroids. Scientists theorize one such event brought carbon-rich and water materials to Earth, which subsequently contributed to the emergence of life on our planet. Although the likelihood of massive hits from a comet or an asteroid that can cause widespread damage is low, an asteroid hitting Earth probability should still be calculated. So will an asteroid hit Earth soon is a question in many people’s minds these days.

What protects us from asteroids and their hits?

After an asteroid hit Earth and killed dinosaurs, there was less chaos in our solar system. Many objects that now collide with Earth’s atmosphere are so small that they swiftly evaporate upon entering our atmosphere. The atmosphere can indeed protect us from smaller objects that are in direct collision with our planet, but there are still celestial bodies in orbits closer to Earth. These are referred to as NEOs, which stand for near-Earth objects. And an asteroid is no small NEO.

But will an asteroid hit Earth any time soon? Good news is that the chances of this happening are very slight. Besides, the Sun and the Moon also contribute to offering us protection against dangerous objects. According to science and logic, larger planets in our solar system protect us from being hit by a NEO because they have stronger gravity. Therefore, an asteroid expected to hit Earth would first have to pass Jupiter, Moon, or Sun before hitting us.

When is the next asteroid predicted to hit the Earth?

Asteroid approaches Earth

Scientists are often asked when will an asteroid hit Earth, so Orbital Today decided to find an answer. We know that there will be a close approach on April 13, 2029, at 21:46 UT, when the Apophis asteroid will come closest to Earth. It will pass our planet closer than any geosynchronous communication satellite, yet it won’t come closer to colliding with us than 31,600 km (19,600 miles). This will be Apophis’s closest approach so far.

And we had another close encounter this year, too. According to NASA, a massive space rock given the designation 2022 KY4 safely avoided Earth by around 6.1 million km (3.8 million miles) on July 17. This is over 16 times the typical distance at which the Earth is from the Moon. This was this NEO’s closest approach in about 100 years, it seems. Asteroid 2022 KY4 has a diameter of about 88 m (290 feet) and is moving at around 27,000 km (16,900 miles) per hour.

Will an asteroid hit Earth? What would happen then?

The likes of an asteroid hitting Earth are very slim. Not only NASA, but also other space agencies are keeping a careful eye on what’s happening out there. The very remote possibility of a NEO’s orbit shifting after interacting with a large object’s gravity and putting that asteroid on a collision course with us exists but is extremely low. However, if it happens, then we should indeed be very scared.

Effects of an asteroid hitting Earth would very much depend on how big this object would be, along with a few other factors. For example, if an asteroid strikes the ground, a significant quantity of dust will be thrown up. If it were to collide with water, water vapour coming up in the air would increase rainfall, which would lead to mudslides and landslides. And let’s not forget about the tragic effects of this impact. An area where it would hit would be destroyed completely.

Can we stop an asteroid from hitting Earth?

Space disaster

Most people are asking will an asteroid hit Earth because they are mostly interested — can asteroid be destroyed? And since the asteroid Bennu has one chance in 1,750 to collide with our planet in 2182, we could indeed think about what we could do to stop or destroy it. Rest assured, scientists are taking care of the problem and coming up with all sorts of solutions and hypotheses that would help us sleep better at night because our planet will be safe for many millions of years from now on.

The most effective idea we can put into practice if an asteroid threatens to hit Earth would be directing an item with a large mass that’s close to our planet’s mass towards this object, causing it to deviate from its path. When the asteroid would still be at an increased distance from Earth, we could deflect it by directly modifying its momentum. But scientists are working on other methods, too, so for now, we can sleep easy knowing that no space rock is about to hit any time soon.

Adobe To Buy UI Design Service Figma For $20 Billion

Adobe To Buy Figma

Adobe Inc., the world’s largest developer of software for image processing, to acquire Figma — a collaborative web application for interface design — for $20 billion.

The combination of Adobe and Figma is transformational and will accelerate our vision for collaborative creativity“, – said Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen.

According to reports, Adobe plans to finance nearly half of the deal with shares and the remainder with cash.

The purchase is the largest acquisition in Adobe’s history. Figma is a collaborative tool for UX and UI design prototyping, mostly used as a web application. Figma is a product similar to Sketch or Adobe XD, and was previously free to use with the standard features.

The Figma company has experienced strong growth in value over the past 9 years. In June 2013, Figma received $3.8 million in seed funding. At the end of 2015, Series A funding raised $25 million. In June 2021, Figma then raised $200 million in a Series E funding round. Figma’s valuation was around $2 billion as of April 2020 and $10 billion at the end of May 2021.

Google Has To Pay A Fine Of 4.1 Billion Euros For Abuse Of Dominant Position With Android

Google Android news and stories

The EU General Court upheld the 2018 ruling that Google used its market dominance to impose restrictions on Android smartphone makers.

However, the judges deviated from the European Commission’s position and reduced the fine from 4.34 billion euros to 4.125 billion euros, as the court announced on Wednesday.

The European Commission concluded in July 2018 that Google’s cooperation policy with mobile device manufacturers was contrary to European law. One of the claims of the EU’s highest executive authority against the company was that, in certain cases, it required manufacturers to pre-install the Google Search application and the Chrome browser.

Thus, according to the European Commission, the company, putting counterparties in a hopeless situation, on the one hand, expanded its dominant presence in the market segment, on the other hand, hindered the development of competitors.

In addition to the fine, Google was ordered to revise the terms of the agreements, which were mentioned in the decision of the European Commission. An appeal against the judgment can still be lodged with the European Court of Justice.

Intel Officially Presented A Working Prototype For A Standard That Can Transmit Up To 80 Gbps

Thunderbolt USB4 Version 2

At the development center in Haifa, Israel, Intel demonstrated a video with a test system running the updated Thunderbolt interface at 80 Gbps.

Thunderbolt 4 currently uses the core USB4 version 1.0 specification support a maximum of 40 Gbps bandwidth, and the new version of the interface shown in Israel is based on the recently announced USB4 Version 2.0 specification.

A screenshot of the demo’s protocol analysis published by Intel shows a dual-link USB4 connection, each capable of transmitting 40 Gbps symmetrically (2×2). The transfer takes place via a USB-C cable. The new interface will be twice as fast as the existing Thunderbolt 4 connection.

Updating Onboarding Process For Hybrid Work Culture

businessmen

Many companies are transitioning to remote or hybrid work cultures. Such a work culture is more likely to increase employee retention. In the time, when we are facing great resignation, retaining the employees has become a task.

Flexible hours and working from home were rated by 78% of respondents in Crain’s Future of Work poll as the most effective non-financial means for employee retention. Hybrid culture is here to stay and you have to adapt yourself to this major change.

With remote or hybrid work culture, having good employee engagement becomes a task. Be it IT onboarding or onboarding for any other job function, it has become uniquely challenging.

With the work from home culture, encouraging employee engagement becomes difficult and hence, you have to upgrade your onboarding process to work according to this new culture.

How to upgrade your onboarding process for hybrid work culture?

Adjusting onboarding for hybrid work culture means bringing the interaction, fun, and learning process to life on a virtual platform.

Get onboarding software

The workload on HRs is always a bit too much but with a hybrid system, it is going to increase. This is where onboarding software helps. It will streamline the process of onboarding. Management of the program and tracking progress becomes fairly easy with onboarding software.

Boosting engagement on virtual platforms is a task, but with gamification features and multiple communication channels, this problem can be tackled. Moreover, the software gives you an added advantage of automation and analytics. Using people analytics is so crucial for assessing the effectiveness of your onboarding program and finding the challenges faced by employees. Data-driven analytics does the same for you without wasting your time and effort.

The software will also help you reduce your paperwork and the time taken to complete all of that. It can send papers via email to all new employees. It will even send reminders if the work is not done before the deadline, so you can sit back and relax for a while.

Plan an online orientation program

Creating a virtual orientation program is different from just repeating the same offline orientation stuff on a virtual meet. With virtual calls, there are challenges of engagement and attention.

Make sure to divide the program into parts and extend it to a week or more if required. Give all the information the new employees need, in smaller parts, for better retention. You can even create communication channels for the new employees to interact and get to know each other.

Deliver welcome gifts and necessary hardware

Even though they are not being present offline, they do deserve a nice welcome package from the company. The first few weeks or months are really important because that is the time when people decide if they want to stay in the company or not. Don’t reduce your efforts to impress your employees and create a good image for your company.

Make sure you deliver the required hardware to your new hire. Not everyone has a good laptop that will run smoothly so provide them with one.

Ask your managers to participate actively

Building a good relationship between your new employee and their managers is very important in the hybrid work culture. New recruits are more likely to express satisfaction when their managers participate actively. Ask your managers to respond to their queries, appreciate them for the good work, and give them appropriate feedback whenever required.

Relay company’s vision and values consistently

Though this is important in the offline mode too, in a virtual environment it becomes more important. All your employees should know the company’s core values and its vision. It is not just about communicating core values through words but also about communicating them consistently through your actions.

Conclusion

Hybrid work culture is here to stay. It gives employees flexibility and ease. You as an organization have to adapt yourself to this changing environment. The onboarding process is very important and exciting but virtually it becomes difficult to have good engagement among the employees. Little tweaks to your onboarding plan are required to survive in this changing world.

Goodbye To The Pixelbook: Google Cancels The Next Laptop And Dissolves The Team Responsible For It

Google Pixelbook cancelled

Google has cancelled the new Pixelbook that was in development, separating the team of employees that was dedicated to the development of laptops based on ChromeOS.

According to The Verge, Google confirmed a few months ago at its I/O in-house exhibition that the company will continue to work on other devices in the Pixelbook series in the future.

According to the leak, the reason behind the cancellation is none other than cost reduction within Google, although the employees who worked on the project have not been fired but transferred to other areas of the company.

The last device in the Pixelbook series to date is the Pixelbook Go, which was introduced in 2019. Google introduced the first Pixelbook in 2017. Later we spotted Google’s Fuchsia OS running on the Pixelbook.

Previously, Google had attempted to release their own devices running ChromeOS with the Chromebook Pixel, introduced in 2013 and a revision of the device in 2015. However, these were not able to establish themselves on the market, presumably also because Google laptops were considered too expensive.

It’s unclear how this cancellation will affect ChromeOS, the development of which continues outside of Pixelbooks.

Ubisoft Announces Assassin’s Creed Mirage And Confirms The Development Of A Samurai Title In Feudal Japan

Assassin Creed Mirage

As part of the Ubisoft Forward presentation, publisher Ubisoft officially unveiled several new Assassin’s Creed series.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage, the new title of the franchise that will arrive next year, will take players back to the Middle Ages but in an entirely new setting — medieval Baghdad, part of the Assassin’s origin.

Its protagonist is an old acquaintance, not only from the last title released in 2020, Valhalla but also from Rebellion — Basim Ibn Ishaq. The story will follow his rise from the bottom of the street to the brotherhood of assassins.

The game is intended to be a deliberate jump back to the beginning of the series. The first game, in particular, was set in a similar scenario. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will only offer single players, and the plot should be linear and tell the story in a more concentrated way than its predecessors.

Mirage is created by Ubisoft Bordeaux, a development studio founded in 2017. Around 400 employees are currently working on the game there. As is almost always the case with this publisher, they are supported by other teams from all over the world. Ubisoft Bordeaux recently produced the Wrath of the Druids expansion for Valhalla.

Although Assassin’s Creed Mirage won’t be the only game, we’ll see for years to come. The company has also listened to its community and has presented Assassin’s Creed Project Red, a title that will be set in feudal Japan, one of the locations that users have requested the most. From Red, we have only been able to see the first concept art: assassin with hints of shinobi on a typically Japanese castle.

And Assassin’s Creed Project Hexe, a mystery title for which we will still have to wait. The only thing we have seen, a small conceptual teaser, seems to take us to the time of the witch hunt, around the XV-XVI century.

And Ubisoft had one last surprise — Infinity, a long-term project that will unite the universes of the game in an animus and that they want to provide with multiplayer capabilities. AC Infinity is currently made up of AC Project Red and AC Project Hexe.

Assassin Creed Infinity

In total, a whole compendium of games from the franchise that we will see over the next few years:

  • AC Mirage (2023)
  • AC Project Red (TBA)
  • AC Project Hexe (TBA)
  • Assassin’s Creed Project Jade (mobile game set in China)
  • Assassin’s Creed Project Nexus
  • The latest DLC for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
