Apple has presented iOS 16 at WWDC 2022 along with iPadOS 16, watchOS 9, macOS Ventura and two new MacBooks powered with Apple M2.

The new iOS 16 focuses on customization, and in this sense, it is now more similar to Android.

The new iOS 16 gets a new lock screen that users can customize more. Fonts, colors and many other elements of the layout can be changed and extended with widgets. The widgets arrange themselves below the clock.

The new OS also manages multiple lock screens to toggle between — much like Apple Watch watch faces. Notifications should no longer cover the lock screen but be either hidden or placed in a stack.

The focus function is extended to the lock screen so that the appropriate settings and widgets are displayed depending on what you are doing.

For the Messages app, with iOS 16, Messages sent can be edited later or even deleted. Users can edit or recall a message up to 15 minutes after it was sent, or recover recently deleted messages up to 30 days after deletion. Like e-mails, messages can also be marked as unread in the future so that they can be answered later. In addition, the Shareplay function comes to this messaging application, which allows you to share the playback of music, series or movies with your contacts in real-time.

Another feature that has gotten an update is Live Text and it now includes text recognition in videos. It is enough for the user to pause a video at any time so that this system based on machine learning can recognize the content and translate it directly into the text.

Wallet on Apple iPhone expands with iOS 16 support to include identification documents and contactless keys. Apple presents the new Apple M2 SoC at WWDC 2022 — second-generation Apple Silicon chips that come with a notable leap in features and performance, surpassing its predecessor in everything.

Apple claims that the development approach of this new SoC has been to focus on the performance/consumption ratio, trying to improve the former and contain the latter.

Apple M2 come with more transistors, more power, and more memory support than their predecessors, and Apple’s tests show 18% and 35% higher CPU and GPU performance, respectively when compared to the M1.

Apple M2 is made with a second-generation 5-nanometer manufacturing process (optimized 5 nm process), which allowed it to build a chip with 20 billion transistors, 25% more than its predecessor — 16 billion transistors on M1.

M2 feature a CPU with four high-performance and four high-efficiency cores, as well as a 10-core GPU capable of 3.6 TFLOPS of power. And it should also be mentioned the incorporation of a 16-core Neural Engine that promises 40% more performance and up to 15,800 billion operations per second.

Apple has significantly improved the memory interface of the M2 — not only will there be a choice between 8, 16 and 24 GB, instead of the previous 8 and 16 GB, but it also has a unified memory bandwidth of 100 GB/s, 50% more than what was offered in the M1.

Mozilla has announced an extension that allows you to translate web pages locally.

Firefox Translations — a translation add-on that doesn’t rely on cloud processing to do its job, as is the case with the translators offered by Google and Microsoft. Instead, Firefox Translations utilizes the machine learning-based process right on your own computer to translate — thus guaranteeing maximum privacy.

The translator’s code, language templates and algorithms are stored on your computer, so no data is sent to the cloud. Typically, this kind of work is done by GPU clusters in data centers, where large language models — gigabytes in size and with billions of parameters — would be deployed to translate a user’s query.
